The current journal issue for ARTis ON, dedicated to the topic of Vandalism and Iconoclasm, the first of its genre in Portugal, aims to establish itself as a reference piece in a time that coincides with the first decade since Dario Gamboni’s fundamental work, The Destruction of Art: Iconoclasm and Vandalism since the French Revolution, in which the author puts forward a comprehensive examination of the phenomenon of modern iconoclasm, and maps out its multiple expressions. Over the course of twelve studies, complementary plural perspectives are presented, resulting from the vision of art historians, curators, plastic artists, international law experts and anthropologists, making this issue particularly attractive to researchers and an unmistakable landmark in the approach to the topic. Theoretical foundations, concepts and methodologies are established, principles set on debate and international law are affirmed, and several case studies are presented, ranging from the 19th century to modern day, where several heritage and artistic demonstrations can be found.
