No. 6Who Does What. Creative Processes in Azulejo - Special Issue

Published May 30, 2018

Issue description

The definition of the different contributions that led to the production and application of azulejo coverings was the challenge set by the special AzLab#33 seminar entitled Who does what: creative processes in azulejo, which was the origin of this special issue of ARTis ON.

In the call for papers one can read that the creation of a tile covering comprises several stages, from conception to application. Several agents stand out during this process – commissioners, tilers, potters, painters or architects – as well as potteries and factories, among others. These tasks were not always completely understood, and there are still doubts concerning the exact role of each agent. For this reason, AzLab#33 was of great importance, as for the first time it issued the scientific community the challenge of studying these different agents and defining concepts for a future thesaurus on tiles, either through a theoretical reflection on the texts, or through particular case studies.
