Although little known and studied, architects’ participation is fundamental to the definition of the specific role tiling plays in each decorative campaign. In that framework, the architects’ role is, by and large, that of a general art supervisor. They might be responsible for drawing details of the decorative programme, for matching the multiple arts and the architectural discourse, for indicating materials or building techniques specific to azulejos or for the supervision of the development of the different construction stages and the payments to the masters involved. Because they take upon themselves the power to make actual decisions, architects are also in a position of favour in the dialogue with those who commission the work(s). Furthermore, they might delegate the execution of detailed drawings to painters and master tilers.
