Abstract

The suppression of religious Orders agitated the art market making possible the gathering of several art works that drove later to the formation of national museums of Art, but also pushing the escape of works of art to the hands of particular owners both national and foreigners. This paper addresses the evolution of the sculpture collection in the Fine Arts Academy of Lisbon, before the creation of a Museum in 1884.
