Abstract

In this study, we intend to present the most relevant elements concerning the life and work of some of the masters associated with the art of tiling in Portugal, in particular the tilers António de Abreu, Domingos da Cruz, Manuel da Mata, Pedro de Almeida, Matias Batista Lisboa, Dionísio de Araújo, and the potters Manuel dos Santos and Miguel de Azevedo.

We will also seek to list documents that allow us to trace their family’s history as well as some events of their professional and artistic path between the end of the seventeenth century and the first decades of the eighteenth century.

Finally, through a set of new data, we propose to broaden the knowledge about these masters tilers, potters and crockery painters in the context of the Masters’ Cycle, establishing and giving coherence and accuracy to the elements that have allowed us to (re)discover the art of tiling in Portugal during this period.
