Classified in 1940 as a National Monument, the Monastery of Santa Clara do Funchal has been open since 1497. After the extinction of the Religious Orders the building has been used for different purposes, and it currently serves as a kindergarten under the care of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. The opening of the ancient monastery’s classified areas to the general public raises the question of the eventual need for a museological program.
