Abstract

The “barros de Portalegre” are a group of polychrome terracotta sculptures produced across the region of Portalegre. These sculptures were found in several small churches and in convents located in north Alentejo, and for the most part, were collected by José Régio. There is no information about the making of “barros de Portalegre”, however, it is almost certain that they originate from this region. Studies made in the past only took in consideration aesthetic and style-relevant caracteristics from said works, though recent observations have demonstrated that the previous caracterization was based upon an aspect that was revealed to non-original – almost all of “barros de Portalegre” from the collection of José Régio are over painted.
