Abstract

The church of Carmo of Lisbon (1389) has become one of the most representative monuments of the Portuguese Carmelite Heritage, due to its wide artistic riches. In troubled periods (1775 earthquake and the extinction of the religious orders in 1834), the Carmelite community played a key role in preserving the surviving estate, continued by the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists (1863) based on the ruins of the ancient church.
