Focusing the analysis on the Archivo Pittoresco (1857-1868), we came across with images and texts related to the artistic heritage. As an example, we studied the representation of religious ornaments. In the texts, illustrated by woodcuts, are reflected the concerns about the conservation of this heritage and proposals for its musealization. The reading of these objects is based on an ideological and cultural perspective of romanticism associated with an appreciation of the national idiosyncrasy. Similar to the built heritage, the artistic objects are regarded as commemorative standards of a glorious national history, testimonies of popular deeds that preserve the national identity.
