Abstract

The Museum of the Macau Cultural and Scientific Centre, in Lisbon, holds in its collection an engraving and a drawing depicting Macau’s views. The first, “Vue de Macao en Chine”, drawn by Gaspard Duché de Vancy dates back to 1787, while the second, “On the Green”, from Warner Varnham, dates back to 1838.

These two works give us complementary and extremely interesting perspectives of Macau city and allow us to recognize physical and human landscapes and reconstruct ambiences.

These images will be analyzed in parallel, in their similarities and differences and cross-checked with coeval written memories, in order to attain new levels of understanding of their epoch, beyond their strictly visual dimension.
